We have been building Claris FileMaker systems for UK businesses for over twenty-five years, including some of the largest solutions in the country. That gives us a reasonably unsentimental view of where the platform still wins.
Where FileMaker is still hard to beat
Speed of delivery. For a bespoke internal system used by ten to two hundred staff, FileMaker will typically reach a working, in-use version faster than any comparable stack. For businesses that need to see progress in weeks, that matters enormously.
Change tolerance. Requirements move. FileMaker absorbs change cheaply, which is precisely where fixed-scope custom development tends to fall apart.
Desktop, web and iOS from one solution. FileMaker Pro, WebDirect and FileMaker Go cover office staff, remote users and field teams without three separate builds. For surveyors, engineers and inspectors working offline, FileMaker Go remains genuinely excellent.
Integration. Modern FileMaker talks comfortably to REST APIs, so it sits happily alongside accounting systems, e-commerce platforms and AI services rather than replacing them.
Where it is the wrong tool
- Public-facing, high-traffic consumer applications.
- Systems needing thousands of concurrent anonymous users.
- Products you intend to sell as SaaS to a mass market.

The real question: what about the system you already have?
Most UK enquiries we receive are not about starting fresh. They are about a system built years ago that still runs the business, and one of these has happened:
- The original developer has retired, left or become unreachable.
- It is stuck on an old version and no longer supported on current macOS or Windows.
- It is hosted on a server under someone's desk.
- Nobody dares change it.
None of these are emergencies, but all of them are risks. The usual path is an audit — schema, scripts, security, hosting, licensing — followed by a prioritised plan. Stabilise first, modernise second, extend third.
Licensing and hosting in the UK
Claris licensing is per-user with annual terms, and the arithmetic changes sharply depending on how many people need access and whether they need full FileMaker Pro or web access only. Hosting should be on a properly managed, backed-up server with a tested restore process — not an office machine. We are happy to review both.
FileMaker and AI
The more interesting recent development is connecting existing FileMaker systems to AI services: classifying incoming documents, extracting data from supplier paperwork, drafting correspondence and summarising records. This gives a fifteen-year-old system genuinely new capability without a rewrite, which is usually the best value available to an established business.
